The 54 columns in this book were published in Opettaja magazine during the years 2004–2016. In addition to the senior specialist position at the World Bank, that period includes similar job at the European Education Foundation in Turin, directorship of the Center for International Mobility and Cooperation (CIMO) at the Ministry of Education and Culture in Helsinki, and a visiting professorship at Harvard University in the United States.
In 2003 Opettaja magazine in Finland invited me to the role of education correspondent to comment on the growing interest in Finnish schools from around the world and at the same time to tell the magazine’s readers what is happening in the field of education elsewhere.
The columns and the comments chosen to follow them are snapshots of the times viewed through the lenses of research, education policy and practical school work. After reading this, I would probably write some things a little differently. But for many things I see things as they are written in this book. The reader’s task is to decide how aptly I have managed to deal with each theme at the time.
In this book that is available only in Finnish language, the columns are divided into four chapters, and at the beginning of each chapter there is a text that tells about that chapter of life, my job, and the phase of education policy that was lived in Finland and around the world.
