Australian education 10 years after

This year Australia acknowledge an anniversary of a rare opportunity to truly transform education as we have had it. Ten years have passed since the landmark Gonski Review found the performance of Australian students had declined, across the board, compared to international benchmarks. It is reasonable to ask: What has changed since the Gonski Review saw daylight in February 2011?

We still debate what makes for a good and equitable education system here in the land of Down Under. We still wonder why are so many teachers demoralised and leaving the profession.

On March 9th 2022 Paul Barclay with Gabbie Stroud and I at Adelaide Writers Week in conjunction with the Griffith Review Learning Curves edition where our essays appear and are accessible via the link above.

I invite you to join Big Ideas’ Paul Barclay for a fascinating conversation from two sides of the educational fence with the same sense of schooling: a system that resembles an over-decorated Christmas tree. I meet Gabbie Stroud, prominent recovering teacher, to discuss the way back to success for Australia’s students, schools and teachers, and the complex mess that currently stands in the way.

Gabrielle Stroud was a primary school teacher from 1999 to 2015. Now a freelance writer, her debut novel, Measuring Up, was published by Scribe in 2009. Her memoir, Teacher, was published in 2018 and she is currently at work on her next novel.

Paul Barclay is a Walkley Award-winning journalist and broadcaster with an appetite for ideas and in-depth analysis and discussion. Paul has produced countless stories over more than twenty years for an array of programs on most ABC radio networks.
