The core mission of the Gonski Institute for Education is to address growing inequality in Australian education as well as improving access for students to high-quality education wherever they may go to school. We will do this by delivering practical, interdisciplinary research as well as focused professional development. GIE will conduct and engage in domestic and international research, test potential solutions and contribute to policy, working closely with governments, educators, community groups and parent associations. As well as rural and regional students, we will strive to improve opportunities for disadvantaged students and students with disabilities, as well as providing the opportunities required by gifted and talented students.
The aim of GIE is for UNSW to be the national centre for excellence in school leadership, system and political leadership, and a global hub for scholars, policy-makers and thought leaders interested in research and practice in educational equity, excellence and access.
The Gonski Institute for Education works under stewardship of Adrian Piccoli. During his years as Minister for Education in NSW, he had the privilege to see every day just how much effort and goodwill from parents, teachers, principals and policy makers went into making a positive change in young people’s lives through education. The Gonski Institute for Education has been set up by UNSW Sydney with the express purpose of supporting that ongoing effort and goodwill.
Professors Chris Davison and Pasi Sahlberg are the first core academic staff of the GIE. Dr. Simon Breakspear has joined the GIE as an adjunct specialist. We invite you to get involved: tell us about your experiences of educational equity and how to solve the global challenge of inequality, inequity and injustice in education. Good opportunities to do that will be our public lectures, professional development events, and social media. Please contact gonski@unsw.edu.au, follow us in Twitter @GonskiInstitute, and view our upcoming events.
